SPE 2025 Automotive Interior Category Award Winner

Awarded “Most Innovative Use of Plastics” for the Power Sliding Console for the Ford Expedition. This award was given to Commercial Tool & Die Inc., Celanese, Summit Polymers, Washington Penn, and Brose, who all significantly contributed to the production of this part. CTD was the tooling supplier for this key body interior part. This award was presented at SPE Automotive’s 2025 Innovation Awards Competition and Gala.

Power Sliding Console

Technology Spotlight

Redesigned power sliding console mechanism and structure delivers best-in-class 32.4 L storage (open or closed). Executed in 35% glass- and talc-filled PP, it replaces cast magnesium with a POM bracket and PP upper retainer with integrated third rail that trims mass by 2 kg (≈20% vs. direct competitors), cuts part count in half, and saves about $20 per vehicle while maintaining rigidity. The console travels 200 mm, adds a locking feature to protect valuables, and places an intuitive power switch ahead of the armrest. Hidden storage sits beneath the cupholders/media tray, with 47% recycled resin used in the upper retainer/rail.

SPE 2023 Automotive Interior Grand Award Winner

Awarded both Body Interior Category Award and Overall Grand Award for the Ford Motor, Co. F-150 Lightning Mega Bin/Frunk. This award was given to Commercial Tool & Die Inc., Cascade Engineering, and Celanese Corporation, who all significantly contributed to the production of this part. CTD was the tooling supplier and processor for this key body interior part. This award was presented at SPE Automotive’s 2023 Innovation Awards Competition and Gala.

Mega Bin / Frunk

Technology Spotlight

By converting from compression molded painted SMC to injection molded MIC LFT-PP to produce this large Class A composite frunk — currently the industry’s largest — mass was reduced 48%, productivity was increased owing to a 37% cycle time reduction, the cost and environmental burden of paint were eliminated, seal interfaces were improved, secondary routering of holes is no longer needed, and the frunk is fully recyclable at end of life. A 4,000 ton injection press and a tool equipped with a 16-drop hot runner system are used to mold parts.
